A square of colour is not a simple thing
The eArtist PIXEL project did not begin with a blockchain. It began with three painters who spent a century proving that a flat plane of colour could carry the whole weight of a work of art — and with a young artist who put a pixel on a wall in 1992.
The lineage
Reduction is the through-line of twentieth-century painting. Each of these artists removed something the previous generation considered essential, until what remained was a colour and a shape — and nothing else.
Kazimir Malevich
1879–1935Black Square, 1915
Reduced painting to a flat, pure plane of colour and stopped. Black Square is not a picture of anything — it is an object made of paint, and it declared that a shape and a colour could be a complete work.
The first artist to insist that a single flat colour is enough. Every colour token is a direct descendant of that claim.
Piet Mondrian
1872–1944Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow
Stripped the canvas to primary colours held inside a black grid, and kept refining it for thirty years. He was not painting a subject; he was testing the relations between colours and the geometry that contains them.
The grid is the ancestor of the pixel lattice. Mondrian’s rectangles are the squares of a colour field, resolved by hand.
Josef Albers
1888–1976Homage to the Square, 1950–1976
Painted one nested-square format over a thousand times to demonstrate that a colour is never seen alone — it is always altered by what surrounds it. Colour, he argued, is the most relative medium in art.
The title eArtist’s own site carried — “Homage to the Pixel” — is an unmistakable echo. Albers showed that a square of colour is a research programme, not a shape.
What all three left unresolved is ownership. Malevich’s square hangs in a state museum. Mondrian’s compositions are held by institutions and private collectors, each one a unique object that can only be in one place at a time. Albers painted the same square a thousand times because the format — not the individual canvas — was the work.
The pixel resolves all three. It is flat, it is a grid, it is colour-as-research — and, uniquely, it can be owned and verified by anyone without being moved. That is the gap the eArtist PIXEL project fills.
The timeline
Robert Jennings has worked in the same visual system for over three decades: the grid, the flat plane, and the relations between colours. The technology changed. The question did not.

The earliest capture in the Internet Archive. The site carries a listed work — “Neptunerising Energy”, 1999, ink on vinyl, limited edition of 250 — and, more tellingly, a Gallery Guide with three states: sold · available · reserved. A public register of ownership status, running on a website, in 1999.
COLOR is registered on Ethereum
146 colours written to an immutable contract. Each token stores its own hex value on-chain — the colour itself, not a picture of it. The token is the first colour of the digital artist’s palette to be owned rather than merely referenced.
PXEL is deployed
The pixel token follows — the second half of the same idea.
The registry is rebuilt
A new contract on Polygon: on-chain metadata that cannot break, artist-approved colours, and royalties that follow the work on every resale. The genesis 146 remain on Ethereum, untouched, as the original record.
The 1997 manifesto
Works of art with an infinite lifespan, streamed into homes and boardrooms.
Written in 1997, when the web was still mostly text, bandwidth was measured in seconds per image, and the concept of buying an artwork that existed only as data was close to unthinkable.
Two of those claims have since been answered by technology: art is streamed, and it does live in homes. The third — infinite lifespan — is the one that needed a blockchain. A JPEG on a server can vanish. A colour written into an immutable contract at a fixed block height cannot.
The claim, stated plainly
In 1992, Robert Jennings introduced digital art to the University of Cape Town. In 1997 he became eArtist. In 2020 he registered the colour itself on Ethereum — 146 colours written to a contract that no one can alter.
Not a picture of a colour. The colour, as an ownable object, with its own hex value stored on-chain. The pixel — the most fundamental unit of the digital image — made into a thing a collector can hold.
Dates and exhibition history are drawn from the artist’s own record; the 1999 website evidence is from the Internet Archive. Auction prices are deliberately not cited here — figures circulating online are frequently misattributed, and the argument does not depend on them.
